The time a new player got a rule wrong and it broke our whole campaign

We were three sessions into a long legacy game at my buddy's place in Tacoma. A new guy joined and insisted a key action worked differently, citing a blog post from 2018. He was so sure he'd read it right that we spent 45 minutes checking the rulebook and online forums instead of playing. It turned out he was looking at a fan-made variant for an older edition. We had to rewind two hours of game state on a shared spreadsheet. Has anyone else had a simple rule argument derail a night that badly?

Sounds like a fun game night to me.

Seems a bit much to lose a whole night over a game. I mean, it's just some fun with friends, right? Maybe it's just me but I don't get that deep into it.
