The guy at the demo table who made me see co-op games differently
I always skipped co-op games, thought they were just group puzzles with extra steps. Then last year at Pax Unplugged, a random dude walked me through a round of Spirit Island and pointed out how the real game is arguing about the best move, not the win. Has anyone else had a stranger flip their whole opinion in ten minutes?
Also, ten minutes at a demo table is probably the most fun that game will ever be for you. Once you buy it and drag it to game night, someone always gets salty about the "perfect" play and it turns into a whole argument that isn't fun anymore. I've seen more friendships tested over co-op games than competitive ones, honestly. It's just a puzzle with extra people yelling at you.
Maybe the guy was just good at teaching, and you're giving the genre too much credit. A lot of co-op games are just one person telling everyone else what to do anyway.
