The 4 player box label on Ticket to Ride bugs me more than it should

I dug out the 2004 rulebook at a game night in Ann Arbor and it says the game plays fine with 2 to 5 players, yet every shelf tag and online listing I saw that weekend shouted "3 to 5" in bold, so I keep wondering how many couples skipped it because of a number someone typed once and nobody fixed.
