That rulebook I read 4 times and still got wrong

Picked up Root last Saturday and thought I had the rules down after reading them twice. Took us 3 hours to get through the first game because I kept forgetting how the Woodland Alliance turns work. Finally watched a 20 minute YouTube video and realized I played the Vagabond completely wrong. Has anyone else spent a whole afternoon learning a game only to find out you missed a big rule?

And this is EXACTLY how I feel about assembling furniture from that Swedish place. You read the instructions, think you got it, then find a random screw left over and your bookshelf wobbles. It's like we're all so sure we've got the rules of life down but then reality smacks us in the face. Your story reminds me that sometimes the BEST way to learn is to just screw it up first and then watch someone who knows what they're doing.

The real trick is that rulebook designers write for legal accuracy not for how people actually learn games... the YouTube video guy gets it because he's explaining it like a human.
