Serious question, is teaching new players to win at Catan on their very first game actually bad for the group?
Six months ago I started running a beginner night at my place in Boise, and I made a rule that I would coach brand new players through their first game instead of crushing them. My trick was simple: I quietly talked them out of two bad trades in the first ten minutes, and now three of those newbies keep coming back and one of them wins pretty often. But a guy in my group says I am ruining the game by handing out free wins, and that people should get wrecked once so they learn the real rules. I get his point, since nobody taught me and I figured it out the hard way back in 2019. So which is it, do you teach new players to be decent right away, or let them lose badly and see if they come back?
