Played Catan for 3 years before realizing you put settlements on corners, not edges

Honestly, I was about 20 games deep into Catan with my buddies in Denver when someone finally pointed out I'd been placing my settlements on the edges of the hexes the whole time. I thought the rule said 'adjacent to roads' meant anywhere along the line, so I was basically blocking whole tiles for no reason. My buddy just stared at me for a solid 10 seconds before asking if I was trolling. Has anyone else played a game completely wrong for that long without knowing?

Oh man, I gotta say your buddy staring at you for 10 seconds is hilarious. But actually, settlements DO have to go on corners, not edges, and you're right that the rule says "adjacent" but it means connected by a road to a settlement on a corner point. So you were blocking tiles but also missing out on production since edges don't collect resources from the tiles they touch. I once played a whole game of Ticket to Ride thinking you could only connect cities with one train route, took me months to figure out I was missing half the board lol.

For real though @grant.richard, at least you didn't try to build a settlement in the ocean like my cousin did lmao.
