My game group in Austin had a huge fight over house rules for Catan last month.

Half of us wanted to use a custom rule about trading with the bank, while the other half said it broke the game's balance. It got so heated we had to stop playing for the night. How do you handle it when your group can't agree on a house rule?

wait so the bank trading thing, is this the "bank gives you any resource for 2 of the same" variant or something else? because i've seen that one tear apart groups where the minmaxers figure out they can just hoard sheep and turn everything into brick for road building. did the fight get personal like name calling personal or was it more of a "this is garbage and you know it" type argument? cause those are two totally different problems to fix

Austin groups should ALWAYS try the new rule.

My friend's group had a similar blow-up over a house rule for Monopoly. They tried letting people put hotels on any property, even without a full set. It caused a huge mess because one player built a hotel on Boardwalk right away. The game ended in twenty minutes with everyone mad. They learned to test new rules in a short game first, not during a serious match.
