My buddy told me my rule explanations were making people zone out, so I started using the 'play a practice round first' method and it cut setup time in half.

He said 'dude, just set it up and let's play a turn, we'll figure out the rest as we go' during a game of Scythe last month, and now everyone actually remembers the rules.

Why learn rules before you can play?

Totally get that! I tried explaining all of Terraforming Mars once and just saw eyes glaze over. Now I just deal the cards and we start, answering questions as they pop up. It's way less stressful for everyone, like @abby_palmer said, why learn it all before you can play? You actually remember how the river works in Concordia after you've moved a boat once.

Right? But what do you do when someone's first turn is totally blocked because they didn't know a key rule?
