I used to think the 'teach the game as you play' method was the only way until my friend in Seattle just started dealing out hands for The Crew before explaining a single rule.

We learned the trickier cooperative bidding and communication mechanics way faster by seeing the actual cards and asking 'okay, but why can't I just tell him I have the 4?' instead of sitting through a 15 minute lecture first.

My usual teaching method is a long lecture, which explains why I play solo games a lot.
