I used to let people explain every rule before playing but now I just yell 'we'll figure it out as we go' and it makes game night way more fun lol
After that time Dave spent 45 minutes explaining the rules to Terraforming Mars I just snapped and now we dive in blind but does anyone else find learning by playing actually works better for groups with short attention spans?

Really depends on the game for me. Something like Catan or Ticket to Ride where the core loop is simple, yeah just jump in. But for heavier games like Arkham Horror or Gloomhaven where you can accidentally break the game or miss a key rule for two hours, I'll skim the rulebook quick first. What works best for my group is me reading the rules solo beforehand, then teaching it in like 5 minutes tops as we set up. Keeps the momentum without the Dave-style 45 minute lecture.

Keeps the momentum without the Dave-style 45 minute lecture" lol I think we all have a Dave in our group. But seriously, do you find that even with your 5 minute teach your group still forgets key rules like half an hour in? Because mine definitely does, especially with the fiddly combat stuff in Gloomhaven.
