Found out the original print run for 'Dune' was only 500 copies, which explains why my local shop's vintage copy is priced at $400.

I stumbled on that fact in a footnote of a designer interview on the 'Board Game Design Lab' podcast last Tuesday, and it made me finally understand the collector's market for some of these older titles.

Ever try hunting for a first edition online?

I used to think it was pointless but now I get the appeal.

That's a wild price, but honestly the print run is only part of it. The real driver is just hype and what people are willing to pay. Look at old Magic cards or video games. Some stuff had huge runs but still costs a fortune because it's the "right" thing to collect. The market feels pretty random sometimes.
