A guy at my FLGS told me I was overexplaining rules and it really hurt at first but he was right

He said I was treating every game like a lecture instead of a conversation, so now I just say 'here are the three things you need to know to start' and let people ask questions as we go, has anyone else had to tone down their rule explanations?

Wait, you mean not everyone wants a 20 minute lecture on edge cases before their first turn lol? I still catch myself going full professor mode and have to shut my own mouth before someone’s eyes glaze over. Honestly though, keeping it short and letting people learn by playing is way smarter, even if it hurts the ego a bit.

Friend of mine tried to teach his girlfriend's family how to play Catan. He spent a solid 15 minutes explaining the robber mechanic alone. By the time the game started, her dad was already scrolling his phone and her mom asked if they could just play Uno instead lol. They eventually got through one round and he never got invited back for game night. That's the thing, once you lose people in the explanation, you've basically lost the whole session before it even begins.
