Noticed how light bends through old mason jars at my grandma's farmhouse kitchen
She had a shelf of antique jars catching the morning sun near Lancaster, PA and I kept trying to figure out the glass thickness in my head, has anyone else tried modeling caustics through imperfect glass and given up halfway?
My grandpa had 12 Ball jars on a windowsill in Lititz and I spent a whole weekend in Blender trying to match that bent light. Tbh I gave up too because the glass is never even, some spots are thick and some are thin and the seams throw everything off. Used to think you could just drop in a glass material, set the IOR, and call it done. Then I read that old jars were blown by hand so the wall thickness swings all over the place, and no model will fake that unless you scan it. Now I just take photos of the real thing and use those as reference instead of trying to build it. Some stuff is better left alone and just enjoyed on the shelf.
