Unpopular opinion: I used to think my forge welding heat was fine until an old timer at the county fair said my steel looked 'like burnt toast'.

He told me to watch for a specific, bright yellow sparkle on the metal's surface, not just a general orange glow, and after three failed attempts last month, getting that visual cue right finally got my welds to stick without crumbling.

That bright yellow sparkle is actually called the "sweat" (weird name, I know). It's the metal just starting to melt on the surface, which is exactly what you want.

Actually, that's the metal oxidizing. The real sweat happens right before it fully melts.

Wait, so @grace419 says that sparkle is the metal melting?
