Took me 7 years to realize my hammer face was too rounded
Was flattening a scroll end in Sheffield last Thursday and noticed the marks were all crescent shaped, so I checked my old cross peen against a straight edge and sure enough it had worn into a curve, anyone else ever stone their faces flat and notice a huge difference in cleanup time?

I read somewhere that old Sheffield tool makers used to check hammer faces with a worn shilling as a gauge, not a straight edge, because they figured if the face matched the coin curve it was still fine for sheet work. That always stuck with me, weirdly enough. You are probably a good decade ahead of me, I only noticed my rounding when the planishing marks started looking like fish scales on a panel I was proud of. I flattened mine with a belt sander and a scrap of plate glass, took maybe twenty minutes, and my cleanup time honestly dropped by a third. The trick is to check it every six months or so, a little stoning beats a weekend of re-dressing, every time.
