The farrier at the Knoxville show told me to stop quenching my tongs in the slack tub
Everyone in my circle says dunk hot tongs in the water bucket to cool them fast, and I did that for two years without thinking. At the Tennessee Valley forge show back in March, an old farrier watched me do it and said "you're cooking the reins, son" and made me feel the jaws on his spare pair. He showed me that fast water cooling makes the metal hard and brittle right where the tongs flex, and his advice was to lay them on the anvil face or hang them to cool in air. I switched three months ago and my 3/8 inch reins have not cracked once since. What do you all do with hot tongs at the forge, water or air?
