The difference between a 20 year old anvil and a new one is unreal

Picked up a beat up Fisher anvil from a guy in Ohio last month for $150. Cleaned off the rust and it's got a rebound like a basketball - the old steel is just way denser than the cast iron junk I was using. Had a Harbor Freight special before that rang like a bell and dinted after every hit. Anyone else find that old anvils just work better even with the wear marks?

Read somewhere that old anvils were forged from wrought iron and had a steel face plate welded on, way denser than modern cast stuff. Bet yours is gonna last another hundred years easy.

Way denser than modern cast stuff" - that's what I always heard too. My grandpa had an old anvil he'd drag out every time he needed to straighten a bent trailer hitch, thing weighed a ton and barely had a scratch on it after fifty years of abuse.

Friend of mine had one fall off his truck bed onto concrete, barely chipped it.
