Spent $40 on a worn-out anvil face fixer kit and it actually worked

Got a beat up 150lb anvil from a farm sale outside Tulsa for $60. The face had this nasty 1/4 inch deep groove right in the sweet spot. Bought a weld build-up kit from Centaur Forge and spent 4 hours grinding it flat. Totally saved me from buying a new anvil. Anyone else try fixing a damaged face or just roll with the dings?

Four hours of grinding on a single anvil face... that's some serious dedication right there. I probably would have given up after the first hour and just worked around the groove. $40 for the kit sounds like a steal compared to dropping coin on a whole new anvil.

Four hours is a grind for sure, but I read somewhere that a true flat face is worth its weight in gold for percussion hammering. @emery965, you're right though, I'd probably have caved and just worked around it too.

True flat face is worth its weight in gold" - yeah, until you're the one holding the angle grinder for four hours. I'd rather pay someone else to do it and just buy a used anvil in decent shape.
