Shoutout to the old timer who told me to slow down my hammer strikes

I was at a demo last Saturday in Boise and this 70 year old guy watched me for ten minutes, then said I hit the anvil way too fast like I was making popcorn. He showed me that one deliberate strike per heat cycle on a 3/8 round bar gives way better control. Has anyone else had some random advice that completely changed their workflow?

Used to think slow meant weak. Totally wrong.

That "hitting it like popcorn" line is perfect... I had a welder tell me something similar about my rhythm being too frantic. He said slow is smooth and smooth is fast, which I didn't get until I actually tried it and my work got way cleaner without me even rushing.
