Rant: I burned a whole billet of 1084 and a guy at the shop in Tulsa just laughed at me
So I finally got my hands on some 1084 from a supplier in Tulsa and figured I would try my first go at a san mai billet with a 15n20 core. I spent about 4 hours getting the stack clean, tacked the corners, and had it in the forge at what I thought was a good welding heat. Pulled it out, hit it with the press, and the whole thing delaminated right down the middle like a cheap frozen burrito. I must have forged too cold on the first pass or had scale trapped in there because the layers just peeled apart. What made me mad is a guy I know from the local group was at the shop that day and instead of helping he just stood there sipping his coffee and said, 'you gotta wire brush it before every pass, buddy.' I know that now. Cost me about 30 bucks in steel and a Saturday, and I still don't have a blade. How do you all keep scale out of the weld on the first press, and do you brush before or after each heat?
