My quench tank water went green and the shop smelled like a swamp for 3 days
So I forgot to drain my quench tank for about 5 weeks this summer and came back to a nice thick layer of green scum on top and a smell that I can only describe as hot pennies mixed with pond water. I figured I'd just dump it out back, but my neighbor came over to see what the smell was and told me to quit dumping it in the yard because it was killing his grass in a perfect rectangle. I ended up hauling 12 gallons in buckets to the drain at the car wash down the street, which took two trips and made me feel like a guy who just did something illegal. The funny part is my tongs came out of that nasty water with a better finish than the clean water, so now I have no idea what to think. My buddy keeps telling me to add a little dish soap and a splash of bleach to keep it clear, but I'm scared of what that does to a hot blade. Does anyone run an aerator or a cheap fish tank pump on their tank, or am I just supposed to be changing the water every week like a responsible person?
