My anvil face went from dull grey to shiny in 6 weeks, and the reason was simple
I picked up a used 150 lb Peter Wright back in March, and the face was dull grey with a rough patch near the horn. I figured it was just wear and left it alone for weeks. Then I read a post here about hammer rebound and tested mine, and the hammer barely came back up. Turned out I was working on a cold anvil, and my shop in Grand Rapids sits at about 40 degrees overnight. I started warming the face with a torch for a couple minutes before forging, and in six weeks of steady use the face polished right up and the rebound got way better. Has anyone else had their anvil run cold and not notice until the hammer stopped bouncing?

I gotta push back on this one because a shiny face is not proof of anything good. Polishing happens from any hammering on clean steel, hot or cold, so you can't credit the torch for that. A cold anvil does not really soak up the hammer blow the way people claim either, the mass is way too big to change much at 40 degrees. And hitting a cold face with a torch for a couple minutes can mess with the temper if you get it too warm, which is a real risk on an old Peter Wright. The rebound getting better is more likely from you dressing the face or just swinging harder once you got warmed up yourself. My bet is the polish came from steady use breaking in the surface, not the heat.
