I thought using a piece of railroad track as an anvil was a bad joke.

Found a 2-foot section at a scrapyard for $20, mounted it on a stump, and it's handled everything from knives to hooks for 5 years now. Anyone else have a surprisingly good 'makeshift' anvil story?

That "bad joke" railroad track anvil is a perfect example of how the best tool is often the one you actually have and use.

Ever try to make one yourself... or is that just a cool idea you saw online?

That railroad track anvil in the photo is actually a real tool I've used for years. It's not just a cool idea from online, Abby. I made mine from a scrap piece of track I found near the old depot. It works well for light forging and straightening. The steel is decent for shaping hot metal when you don't have a traditional anvil. It's a practical solution, not a bad joke.
