Got a reality check on tool durability from a gardener

I was at a local swap meet with my handmade shears, thinking people only care about the sharp edge. A gardener asked if they'd hold up in clay soil, and I realized I'd never tested for that. What's your method for checking how tools handle different conditions?

My chisel snapped in rocky dirt last spring...

Ever thought about making your own test batches of different soil types? Mix up some wet clay or sandy dirt in a bucket and really put your shears through their paces. That kind of hands-on check beats just assuming they'll work in any condition.

Oh man, johnh82, you're really trying to get me to play in the mud. That's a solid idea for testing, but my backyard already looks like a disaster zone. I'll stick to hoping for the best.
