Found out my anvil is actually a cast iron fake
Was rearranging my garage last weekend and decided to look up the brand stamp on my anvil I bought 3 years ago off FB Marketplace. Turns out it's a cast iron ASO, not a real forged anvil. Found a forum post that showed exactly how to check using a file test and the ring test - my anvil went thud instead of ringing. I paid $150 for this thing thinking I got a steal. Has anyone else accidentally bought a fake anvil and found out way too late?

Ah man that stinks. I felt that 'went thud' part.

Is that what they call a "thud" in the technical manuals? Sounds like the engine just gave up and went for a nap, maybe it was tired of all that RPM nonsense. Probably cheaper to swap the whole car than fix whatever that sound was anyway, right? Hope you at least got a good story out of it before it died completely.

Oh man, that's rough. My buddy Dave had an old Civic that did the exact same thing on the highway once. @spencer664, I swear it went "thud" so loud I thought he hit a deer, but nope, just the engine deciding it was done with life. Ended up being a rod that punched straight through the block, left a hole you could stick your finger in. The junkyard gave him $200 for the whole car, and he still talks about that sound like it was a funeral.
