Found a trick for stopping scale buildup on my anvil face and it cost me 50 cents
I was brushing my anvil face with a wire wheel after each heat and still fighting flaky scale spots all over it, which was driving me nuts on finish work. A guy at the supply house in Tulsa mentioned he rubs his down with a chunk of plain paraffin wax while it's still warm from the last heat, maybe 200 degrees or so. I tried it on a Tuesday and the next morning the scale popped off in one pass instead of me scraping for 20 minutes. I reapply every few forge sessions and it takes about 10 seconds. Anyone here using beeswax or something else that holds up longer?

What does the wax actually do when you're at full heat though? I always figured it'd just burn off the second you lay a hot billet down, and then you're back to square one. Do you swipe it on right at 200 or wait for it to cool more?
