Finally got a clean weld on a 1/4 inch plate after 3 tries
I keep seeing people on forums say you can just crank the heat and go, but my first two tries had slag inclusions all over. On the third try I spent 5 extra minutes preheating the plate with a torch and it came out clean. Anyone else notice preheating makes a bigger diff than people let on?

@jason112 I ran it at 130 amps with 7018 rod. But honestly preheat is still worth it even on thin stuff if you want a clean puddle. Saves so much cleanup time.

Take it easy on the preheat there. 1/4 inch plate is usually fine without it if you have your settings right, preheating matters more once you get past 1/2 inch. What kinda settings were you running?
