A guy at the Montana forge meet said my hammer blows were too hard for finishing work. I tried lighter taps and the difference is wild.

Yeah it's crazy how much control you gain with a lighter touch. I used to just whale on the metal to smooth it out and wondered why my finish was always wavy. Switching to those light, fast taps lets you actually feel the high spots and work them down without distorting the whole piece. It feels weird at first like you're not doing enough, but the results don't lie.

Oh man, telling a newbie to use a lighter hammer is like telling someone to whisper in a fight club. The look on their face is pure "you want me to do WHAT to this metal?" until they see the finish. It's the ultimate "less is more" trick that feels totally wrong.

Totally agree, it's wild how light taps fix everything. @terry_martinez once told me he had to hammer the same dent like fifty times with a soft touch before it finally settled, and I thought he was nuts until I tried it myself. Now I feel like a metal whisperer or something.
