TIL bird tape on the outside beats fancy film every time
I stopped by my sister's place in Portland last weekend, she had maybe 4 strikes in 6 months on her big living room window. She tried that UV film, the decals, even soap streaks, nothing worked. Then her neighbor, a retired biologist, stuck simple white tape strips in a grid on the outside, like 2 inches apart. We sat there for an hour and watched two chickadees veer off at the last second, no thud at all. Has anyone else had better luck with plain old tape than the pricey stuff, or is it just about the pattern on the outside? I'm about to redo my own setup and want to avoid buying another $40 kit that does nothing.

Oh man, I used to be the person who swore by the fancy stuff, I dropped like $60 on that translucent film and thought I was being smart. But yeah, my backyard finches kept smacking into the same spot right below it, so I finally tried the cheap tape trick out of pure frustration. It's wild how a simple grid on the outside just works better because the birds actually see it as a solid barrier, not a weird reflection thing. I think the key is really that outside placement, the film on the inside just turns the glass into a mirror when the light hits it right. Now I just buy a roll of white masking tape and redo it every spring, costs me like three bucks and honestly my strike count went from once a week to maybe twice a year.
