Three years of bird tape in the wrong spot

I had those UV reflective strips stuck on my picture windows for 3 years but birds still kept thumping into them every spring. My buddy visited last month and pointed out the tape was 8 inches apart instead of the recommended 2 inch spacing. How did I miss that basic rule for so long?

Wait, @iris_mason88 you think spacing matters more than the actual distance between strips? I gotta disagree - 8 inches is so far apart birds basically have a clear landing strip, even spacing isn't gonna save you there.

My buddy tried exactly that setup on his back porch last spring. Eight inch gaps like you said, birds just walked right between them like it was a parking spot. He swore by the even spacing thing too, thought it would confuse them. But nah, they figured it out in like two days, just hopped through the gaps like nothing. Even spacing doesn't matter if the opening is big enough for a pigeon to squeeze through without touching anything. He ended up having to staple mesh over the whole thing anyway.

Did you keep the spacing even across whole windows or just the center panels?
