The day a cardinal hit my kitchen window and I learned about tape

I was making coffee in my kitchen in Cincinnati last Tuesday when a loud thump made me jump. A bright red cardinal had flown straight into the big window over the sink and was lying stunned on the deck. I felt awful, and after it flew off okay, I looked up what to do. I read that putting strips of white tape on the outside of the glass, about 4 inches apart, can break up the reflection. I tried it that afternoon with some basic masking tape, and I haven't had a single strike since. What other cheap fixes have you guys tried that actually work?

Heard my neighbor tried soap streaks on his patio door.

Your kitchen window is now a crime scene with tape. At least the birds are finally getting the hint.
