My neighbor swore by soap streaks on the glass, but it was a total mess
He said drawing lines with a bar of soap would stop the birds, so I tried it after a robin hit my kitchen window in spring. The rain just smeared it into a cloudy film I could barely see through, and a sparrow still bounced off the pane a week later. Has anyone found a cheap trick that actually works for more than a few days?

Try a different soap, maybe a dry bar. The streaks need to be thick and waxy to last.

Yeah, the "thick and waxy" part is key. I saw a video where they said that's what actually seals the water out. A dry bar soap might get you there faster than a liquid.

Yeah, @simonmoore nailed it, the waxy thickness is what does the trick. A dry bar soap left out to harden first might give you that better seal.
