Just realized my new feeder placement might be causing more strikes

I was listening to a podcast about urban birds while fixing a ceiling fan this morning. The host said if you put a bird feeder less than three feet from a window, the birds don't build up enough speed to get hurt if they hit it. I had my feeder about six feet out, which they said is the worst distance. I moved it right up against the glass this afternoon. Has anyone else tried this close placement and seen fewer thumps?

How long did it take you to notice a change? That's such a smart fix. I feel bad for not knowing about this sooner, my last place had a big window and I heard those awful thuds all the time. What @luna_green said makes total sense, if the feeder is right there the birds can't get going fast. I'm definitely going to remember this for the future. It's a relief there's such a simple way to help them.

Moving it right up against the glass is the best move. I had the same issue with a feeder at that bad middle distance and the thuds stopped almost completely after I stuck it on the window with suction cups. The birds just flutter straight to the seeds now. Have you noticed a difference since you moved it?
