Heard a neighbor say 'they just bounce off now' and it got me thinking

I was walking the dog this morning and my neighbor Frank was pointing at his new windows. He said, 'Got these last fall, and the birds just bounce off now, no more thuds.' He had put those little dot decals all over them, the kind you can barely see from inside. Made me remember my parents' old house, where a cardinal hit the glass every spring like clockwork and we never did a thing. Now you can get that tape for under ten bucks at the hardware store. Has anyone else noticed people are just more aware of this now than they were, say, twenty years ago?

That "no more thuds" line hits home, my old apartment had the same sad sound every fall.

Come on, it's just a sound. My last place had a loose gutter that banged all winter. You get used to it after a week and stop noticing. People are acting like a little noise is some deep tragedy. It's just part of living in a building, not a sign of the universe being sad.

Funny how we get attached to annoying sounds until they're gone, then it feels like something's missing. Maybe the real tragedy is realizing you actually liked that broken gutter or thud all along.
