My book club called me out for hating a show everyone loves
Last Tuesday at our meeting in Portland, someone said they couldn't finish 'The Bear' because it stressed them out. I agreed and got stared at like I had two heads. Everyone else thinks the chaos is genius, but I just see anxiety with a soundtrack. Has anyone else felt like a show gets praised too much just because it's intense, not because it's actually enjoyable to watch?
Hear me out, but that anxiety is the whole point. The show isn’t trying to be a cozy hangout, it’s trying to show what a real kitchen feels like, and that pressure is the story. If you take the stress away, you just have people cooking nice food and that’s a different show entirely. Saying it’s praised only for being intense misses how that intensity actually builds the characters, you see Carmy’s pain in every slammed fridge door. Sometimes being great at something means it’s not comfortable to watch, and that’s okay.
