The 22 mile rain ride that taught me my 'waterproof' bag was lying
After 3 months of commuting with a supposedly sealed pannier, I pulled my laptop out at the office in Portland to find it dripping from the side zipper, not the top. It turns out the fabric is water resistant but the seams and zipper track let everything in when you're going 18 mph in a downpour for 40 minutes. Has anyone else had luck with those cheap roll-top dry bags as an insert, or do you just carry a trash bag as backup?

Feel your pain on that one. I had a similar moment with a brand new backpack that claimed to be waterproof, took it out for a short ride, and my phone ended up in a Ziploc bag of rice for two days because the side pocket let everything in. The cheap dry bag insert honestly saved me, I just roll it up tight and stuff my stuff in there, it works way better than the fancy bag ever did. Trash bags are a solid backup too, but they rip easy and you gotta be careful not to poke holes in them with keys or pens. Hope your laptop survived the soak, that's a rough way to start a workday.
