Serious question, after getting doored on 8th Street in Portland I stopped riding in the door zone, but is hugging parked cars actually worse?
Three months back I was cruising down NE 8th in Portland when a guy in a parked Silverado swung his door wide and I ate it at 18 mph, and ever since I ride a full door's width into traffic even though drivers honk at me, but my buddy swears I'm trading one danger for another and I'm not sure who's right.
Ouch, getting doored at 18 mph sounds rough and I'm glad you made it through that. Your buddy isn't totally wrong that the door zone is dangerous, but hugging cars is way worse because you've got zero room to dodge anything, and drivers behind you can see you better when you take the lane anyway. Ride safe out there and trust your gut on this one.
