Mocked a guy for his rain gear setup but he was onto something

I used to laugh at this dude I saw downtown Denver who had fenders AND a poncho AND rain pants. Looked like a total overkill nerd. Then last Tuesday I got caught in a surprise downpour 3 miles from work and my "just a jacket" plan left me soaked down to my socks. Dude passed me dry as a bone while I was squishing into the office lobby with puddle feet. Has anyone else had a gear setup they dismissed but now swear by?

And the thing nobody talks about is how much heat you lose through wet legs. I ride with neoprene gaiters now, just simple Velcro ones that go over my boots and under my pants. Cost me twelve bucks and my feet stay bone dry even in a full storm. That guy with the fenders probably figured out years ago that keeping your extremities warm is the real battle, not just your torso.

What kind of gaiters you using exactly? I tried a pair and they slid down my boots after an hour. Kept having to pull them up at every stoplight.
