Broke a spoke 3 miles from home on a rainy Tuesday

I was riding home from work near downtown Minneapolis when my rear wheel started wobbling. Pulled over and saw a broken spoke had snapped and was poking into the frame. Had to walk the bike to a bus stop and take the bus the rest of the way. Anyone carry spare spokes or have a quick fix for getting home when this happens?

Ugh, that's the worst. I once snapped a spoke two blocks from a bike shop and still managed to make the situation worse by trying to zip-tie it to the neighboring spoke and riding home anyway. Ended up turning a $5 fix into a $30 rim replacement. Spare spokes sound like a good idea until you realize you also need a spoke wrench and the patience of a saint to get the tension right on the side of the road. Did you at least get a good story out of the wet walk to the bus stop?
