Snapped a spoke mid-ride on the Burke-Gilman trail last Tuesday

Was cruising along near the UW campus when I heard that awful ping. Rear wheel went totally wobbly. Walked it to Recycled Cycles, watched the mechanic swap the spoke and true the wheel in like 15 minutes. Cost me $28 total. Any tips for keeping spokes from snapping on older wheels?

Dude same thing happened to me last month on that exact trail by the light rail tracks.
