Serious question, a guy at the Indy swap meet showed me his chain wear check and it split the room
I was at the bike swap in Indianapolis last spring and a retired shop guy did a free chain check on my commuter. He laid a ruler on it and said anything past 1/16 inch over 12 links means new chain now, no debate. Half the guys around us nodded and the other half said that's way too picky and you're just selling chains. He also said he sees 3 or 4 drivetrains a month chewed up by folks riding 1/8 inch past spec. I've been doing the ruler check ever since and caught two chains early, but part of me wonders if I'm just being cheap about cassettes. Where do you all draw the replacement line, and does it change for a beater bike versus a nice one?
