I finally stopped using Park Tool chain checking tools

Used to swear by the Park Tool CC-2 chain checker for years, but I noticed it was telling me chains were worn way before they actually were. Switched to a simple 12 inch ruler method about 6 months ago and realized I was tossing chains with 100+ miles left on them. Has anyone else found that the Park checker is too aggressive on the wear readings?

Gotta disagree with you here. I've been using the Park CC-2 for maybe four years now and I track every chain with a notebook. I check wear at 500 miles, 750, 1000, and so on. The ruler method gave me false hope twice, letting a chain stretch so bad I had to replace a cassette and chainring early. Park's tool might call it done a little early, but 100 miles is nothing compared to the cost of a new drivetrain. You ever actually measured a worn chain against a brand new one side by side?

Ruler method works fine for me if I clean the chain first and check at multiple spots, but I do agree Park's tool is more consistent. You gotta know your specific chain too, some brands just wear differently and cheap ones can fool any measurement.
