Found a 1973 Schwinn service manual and it says to repack hubs every 2,000 miles
I was cleaning out the back room at the shop last month and found a 1973 Schwinn service manual buried in a box of old catalogs. It says to repack wheel hubs every 2,000 miles, which blew my mind because I can't remember the last time a customer asked for that. Now everything is sealed cartridge bearings and most people just ride them until they grind, then buy a whole new wheel. I get it, sealed hubs are easier and last longer, but there was something nice about a bike you could fully take apart on the bench. The manual even has a torque chart for every bolt on the bike, which almost nobody bothers with on a $600 hybrid today. Do any of you still do hub repacks on customer bikes, or is that just a thing we do on our own stuff now?
