Debate: Should shops charge for flat repairs on tube swaps?

I was at a shop in Denver last month and saw two mechanics argue about this. One guy said flat repair is basic customer service and builds loyalty. The other said tube swaps take 10 minutes and shops should charge $15 to cover labor. I get both sides but in my book time is money and flats are part of the job. What do you do at your shop charge extra or bundle it in?

Wait, are we really debating whether or not to charge for flat repairs on tube swaps? The mechanic who said it builds loyalty is right, but only if you're already charging a fair price for the tube swap itself. I've seen shops that bundle a basic flat fix into the swap fee, like an extra $5, and call it a "flat repair package." That way, the customer feels like they're getting a deal, but the shop isn't just giving away free work. The other guy's got a point about time, but 10 minutes of labor isn't worth $15 unless you're paying your mechanic that much per hour. If you're already charging $30 for the tube swap, adding another $15 for a flat repair feels like double-dipping, and that kills loyalty way faster than not charging for it.

So we're just out here charging for air now too? Next time a customer comes in with a pinch flat I'm gonna charge them a "consultation fee" for looking at the tire. Honestly the $5 bundle idea is genius, that way the shop looks like a hero while still making a buck. But yeah if you're already asking $30 for a tube swap and then hit them with another $15 for a basic flat patch people are gonna start bringing their bikes to the guy who works out of his garage for a six pack.
