My stylist in Phoenix said my hair was breaking because of one dumb habit
I went in for a trim 3 weeks ago and my stylist Angela actually stopped cutting and asked what I was doing at home. She said the ends of my hair were snapping off in a pattern she sees all the time, and she pointed at the little elastic bands sitting on my wrist. I had been sleeping with my hair in a tight topknot every single night for probably a year because I hate it touching my face. She said that tension right at the same spot was rubbing and pulling the hair all night long. I figured she was just trying to sell me something, but she showed me the breakage under a light and it was right where the band sat. So I switched to a loose braid with a soft scrunchie and a silk pillowcase from Target, which cost me about $18 total. Three weeks in, I am still finding some short pieces but way less than before. Has anyone else had a stylist call out something you did every night without thinking about it?
Stylists do this a lot where they blame one thing, but tight bands are rarely the whole story on their own. Hair breaks from a mix of stuff like heat, bleach, rough brushing, and old damage that finally catches up, so a loose braid alone usually won't fix a year of it overnight. You probably did help it, but I'd bet the $18 setup gets way more credit than it deserves here.
