My scalp burned for 3 days after I used a box dye from 2 years ago

Last Saturday I found an old box dye under my bathroom sink in Denver that I bought back in 2023 and figured it was fine since it was never opened. By Sunday night my scalp was on fire and I had red bumps all along my hairline, so I ended up at urgent care on Monday morning with a steroid cream and a $75 bill. Has anyone else used expired dye and had this happen, or am I just dumb for not checking the date?
