Shoutout to the retired marine biologist who corrected my glove habit at Topsail Island
I used to brag about picking up every single plastic fragment with bare hands, thought it made me tougher or something. Then this older woman at the Topsail Island cleanup last March pulled me aside and said, 'You're missing the small stuff under the wrack line, and you're touching stuff you shouldn't.' She made me switch to a garden claw and a bucket with a sifter bottom. Now I cover twice the shoreline in an hour and I stopped getting mystery rashes. Has anyone else had to drop their bare-hand pride to actually clean better?
