Sand sifter got stuck on a syringe at Crystal Cove

Last Saturday I was sifting near the tide pools at Crystal Cove and hit a buried syringe, it bent my sifter frame sideways before I even saw it. I had to spend 20 minutes digging it out with gloves and a grabber, and I nearly cut through my bag liner trying to stash it safely. Has anyone else had a sharp object wreck their gear, and how do you keep your sifter from getting jammed up on the weird stuff?
