Picked up 1,847 cigarette butts at Ocean Beach last Saturday and now I can't stop thinking about the 2 hour vs 4 hour cleanup debate
I did a 2 hour solo cleanup at Ocean Beach in San Francisco last Saturday and counted exactly 1,847 cigarette butts, which is more than double what our group of 12 found in 4 hours the weekend before. Some folks in our crew swear shorter, more frequent cleanups work better since volunteers stay fresh, but others say you need the full 4 hours to really cover ground and get into the dunes where the heavy stuff hides. Which side are you on, and has anyone actually tracked butts per hour to see if one method pulls more trash?
1847 butts in 2 hours solo is wild, my personal record is like 12 before I get distracted by a cool rock. But honestly the 2 hour vs 4 hour thing probably depends on whether your volunteers are still actually picking or just standing around talking for the last hour like I do. Maybe someone should just log butts per hour for a month and settle it for real.
