Had a chat with a retired marine biologist about the bottle caps we find
So last Saturday at the cleanup near Santa Monica pier, this older guy walks up holding a mesh bag half full of bottle caps. We got to talking and he told me he's been tracking them for 12 years. He said the plastic ones from soda brands are way down since the 5 cent deposit push, but the metal ones from craft beer are up like crazy. Weird thing is, he keeps the caps separate because he sends them to some grad student who studies what kind of algae grows on them in different water temps. That made me rethink how I sort my finds. I still just toss everything in one bucket, but now I wonder if I'm ruining data for someone. Anyone else run into volunteers who collect specific trash for research?
